Richmond schools give meals to families during water crisis [Video]

For many Richmond families, the school division isn’t just a place for their children to learn. It also serves as a source of community aid providing necessary resources, including two free meals daily.

So when Richmond Public Schools entered its second day without students in its buildings, officials knew they would have to act quickly to get much-needed resources to its most vulnerable communities.

Overnight, the gymnasiums of Henry L. Marsh III and Cardinal elementary schools were transformed into pick-up and delivery zones.

Hundreds of grab-and-go boxes and bags stuffed with enough nonperishable, ready-to-eat meals to last families in the upcoming days sat neatly stacked on tables.

The division handed out hundreds of meals on Wednesday. It intends to do the same through the week.
