Remains found believed to be missing Amherst woman [Video]

AMHERST — Human remains were found at a residence Wednesday in Amherst County with all indications leading the county sheriff’s office to believe are those of Elsie Mae Wigginton, who has been missing since June 2023, Sheriff Jimmy Ayers announced.

“It’s truly a sad day,” Ayers said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

At about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 673 Pendleton Drive in Amherst, Ayers said. Wiggington, 45, was reported missing on June 26, 2023, and the sheriff’s office awaits DNA confirmation from the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke, he said.

Her husband, Frederick Lewis Wiggington Jr., 37, of Rockbridge County, was located in Stuarts Draft and has been taken into custody, Ayers said. He is charged with concealing a dead body and was taken to the Middle River Regional Jail in Staunton where he is being held with no bond, …
