Public input sought on flood prevention plans for Horry County [Video]

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Horry County residents and business owners in flood-prone areas could soon see strategies aimed at reducing their risk of flood damage.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in collaboration with Horry County has released a draft feasibility report addressing the flood risks in the Waccamaw River Basin, particularly impacting Horry County.

The report outlines strategies to mitigate both current and future flood threats posed to communities and transportation routes in the region.

“Mitigating those risks is critical — not only for us but also for the communities in the Pee Dee region, including Myrtle Beach and Conway,” said Nathan Wilkes, a public affairs specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District of Charleston.

According to the report, Horry County, home to about 397,000 people, has experienced significant flooding, with 36 recorded events since 1950, particularly from hurricanes and intense rainfall. The report highlights that …
