GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Little Book Cliff wild horse herd is facing another helicopter round-up on Sept. 11. Local residents, along with advocates from Denver, Wyoming and even New York, are trying to get the Bureau of Land Management to stop the roundup, as requested by Polis when he passed the Wild Horse Project bill in May.
They believe that the helicopter round-ups are inhumane and will not only cause ecological decline but also harm the economy by removing a well-known tourist attraction. The group gathered at the BLM offices before meeting with officials to discuss potential alternatives.
The BLM stated that, after extensive research, helicopter round-ups are the most efficient way to gather the horses and are necessary to ensure the sustainability of the range that feeds them. They also mentioned having multiple conversations with the governor and emphasized the need for the round-up to preserve the range.
