Many people buy a costume that they only wear once before ultimately throwing them out. Julie Maurer, the materials management program coordinator for Lenawee County, suggests giving them a new life.

“Look on Facebook marketplace,” Maurer said. “Let’s try to reuse costumes from last year.”

Maurer also suggested sharing amongst friends or buying second-hand. It saves money, but it also limits waste.

“Tap into your thrift stores,” Maurer said. “They always have rows and rows of Halloween costumes every year.”

When setting out decorations, don’t underestimate the power of DIY projects. Pumpkins can be perfect because you can use the insides for treats, carve the pumpkins, and then compost them.

It’s difficult to avoid single-use plastics entirely, especially during trick-or-treat. The best thing to do with this plastic is to make sure they do not end up in the recycling bin.
