Program attracts Peoria youth to learn life skills and avoid violence [Video]

PEORIA (25News Now) – Fourteen high school students from Peoria’s south side are taking part in a program to help them stay off the streets and achieve their life goals.

Antonio Lipscomb, president of the Minority Contractors Collaboration, said this is beneficial for the kids, and also community.

Program participants include 13 boys and a girl.

Students Jairell Irby and Kendall Johnson share their stories.

“After high school, I plan to go to Greenville University and do football, with nursing and maybe construction,” said Johnson.

“It’s a good path, and it’s beneficial long-term for your life goals,” said Irby.

This is a way for the students to learn trades and essential life skills, said Lipscomb.

“They learn hand tools, power tools, blueprint reading, construction math, communications skills, as well as employability skills,” Lipscomb said.

Peoria Police offered grant money to help students stay away from violence and focus on their future.
