Portland shelters to cut adoption fees for weekend Adopt ASAP event [Video]

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – For the first time in more than a decade, shelters throughout the Portland area are working together to slash adoption costs for just three days.

On Oct. 25-27, five area shelters will be offering open adoptions with 75% off adoption fees as part of Adopt ASAP. It’s a collaborative effort by the multi-state Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (ASAP) as member organizations such as the Oregon Humane Society say they are overrun.

That’s especially true of medium to large dogs and kittens.

According to Sharon Harmon, OHS president and CEO, a decline in access to veterinary care is one of the causes.

“That you can’t get an appointment, costs have increased considerably,” Harmon said. “Veterinarians are worth every penny but for some pet owners it may be outside of their budget.”
