Police identify man fatally shot by lone officer in Mountain View [Video]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The man who died in an officer-involved shooting Sunday night in Mountain View has been identified.

Anchorage police say 24-year-old James V. Afuvai was shot and killed by a lone officer Sunday after police say Afuvai charged at the officer with a 12-inch knife.

Police said his next-of-kin has been notified.

According to the Anchorage Police Department, the officer fatally shot Afuvai in the upper body at least one time after he ran toward him with the knife while ignoring commands to drop it.

APD Chief Sean Case held a midnight press conference Monday where he said the involved officer was responding to a 911 call in the 500 block of North Park Street concerning a man who was injured in an emergency.
