FOLEY, Ala. (WKRG) — When heavy rains fall in Foley, the water rises in Beulah Heights sometimes with extreme results.

In July 2021, there was so much water that caskets in a neighborhood cemetery floated right out of the ground.

Development in the area has only made the problem worse.

“Sometimes the squeaky hinge gets the oil,” lifelong resident Calvin Hare said.

Beulah Heights has become that squeaky hinge.

“Culverts get stopped up and sometimes they don’t hold the capacity to allow the water to flow as it should,” Hare said.

A project expected to get started later this year will address some of the drainage issues by expanding the capacity of a detention pond off Michigan Avenue. The project also includes cleaning out drainage pipes flowing into the pond.
