Prince George’s County is pushing to address the issue of abandoned shopping carts by holding retailers accountable. Council member Wanika Fisher sponsored a bill that would require stores with over 20 carts to label and secure them properly, using methods like magnetic locks or a security deposit system.

Starting June 2025, stores could face daily $2,000 fines if they don’t comply. While some, like the Maryland Retailers Alliance, argue this could be costly and the fines too steep, Fisher believes it’s necessary to incentivize businesses to act. The bill will go to a vote on October 15.
