Perth residents clash with authorities over tree removal for housing development [Video]

A standoff between environmental activists and authorities has culminated in the removal of century-old trees to make way for a new housing development in Perth’s inner north. 

The emotional scenes in Mount Lawley underscored the community’s deep attachment to the trees and their determination to protect them.

One protester had spent 26 hours chained to a tree in a desperate attempt to save it.

Despite the emotional toll, the protesters remained resolute, hoping their efforts would inspire others to stand up for the environment and their community. 

“If I come back here to try and protect these trees, I’ll get a $12,000 fine or 12 months in jail,” one protester said.
