MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Myrtle Beach leaders remain locked in contract negotiations with county leaders and Pelicans management, Mayor Brenda Bethune said on Tuesday.

And as those talks continue — community members say they’re watching closely as the possibility of losing minor league baseball lingers.

Chuck Sawall, an on-field host and Pelicans season ticket holder, said losing the club not only cost seasonal jobs but carry wider economic consequences. Just this year alone, the stadium hosted charity and enrichment programs that raised $3 million, he said.

“Hopefully, they think about that when they’re in their negotiations,” Sawall said. “The city has unfortunately got the name ‘Dirty Myrtle’ for things like violence you see on Ocean Boulevard and things like that. So I’d hate to see the community lose one of the largest family friendly attractions that it has.”
