Pa.’s historical marker program officially back in business | News [Video]

You might see more of those iconic blue and yellow signs that mark the sites of important happenings across Pennsylvania popping up soon.

The state’s historical marker program is back in business, following a pause announced two years ago because of supply chain issues impacting the manufacturing of the cast iron signs.

The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) is now accepting new marker nominations for 2025. It’s an online process done through PA-SHARE, the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office’s data management system. Paper applications and emailed applications will not be accepted.

While the program was paused, PHMC reviewed the marker program and made some changes, including a simplified nomination process. Instead of a long essay, the application now requires just a short summary about the subject’s importance.

PHMC also updated guidelines for which sites make the cut and reinstated a staff marker review committee. Ultimately, nominations will still be …
