Orion Minerals secures key water use Licence for Okiep Copper Project

Orion Minerals Ltd (ASX:ORN, JSE:ORN) managing director and CEO Errol Smart joins Proactive’s Tylah Tully to discuss how it has recently secured a crucial Integrated Water Use Licence (IWUL) from South Africa’s Department of Water and Sanitation for the Okiep Copper Project (OCP) in the Northern Cape Province.

This licence, authorised under the National Water Act and valid for 20 years, is specifically for the Flat Mines Project which includes the Flat Mine North, East, and South deposits. The approval represents the final significant permitting requirement before construction and production can begin.

Smart said the licence was a significant milestone, noting the intensive environmental and engineering efforts involved, and emphasised the project’s adherence to high Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards.

The project will not strain the existing municipal water supply and will contribute to local infrastructure improvements and economic development in the Nama-Khoi District, a water-sensitive region.

The Flat Mines Project, central to Orion’s broader strategy, involves the exploitation of 9.3 million tonnes of mineral resources at 1.3% copper. A bankable feasibility study (BFS) is scheduled for completion by December 2024, targeting the processing of 780,000 tonnes per annum over a 12-year mine life.
