ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Orchard Park Police Department announced one person is dead after being shot and killed by police Friday night.
Two officers responded to the area of Hawthorne Drive and Poplar Avenue at about 8:50 p.m. for a report of a confrontation involving a gun and a knife.
Upon arrival, police say they found a man the department has had “prior interactions with in the past.” According to police, the man was holding a knife and ignored commands from the officers.
It is alleged that the man advanced at the officers and was shot. The two officers began performing life-saving measures while additional emergency crews arrived.
Chief Patrick Fitzgerald says they’re in the early stages of the investigation, working with the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit and the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
