NORTH OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – For a month, a group of teen girls learned what it takes to be a basketball official. It’s through the Girls Ref the World Girls Officiating Academy put on by EPIC for Girls.
“It’s such a high demanding career, but there is not a lot of minority women in the position, not a lot of minority girls. And we believe that representation matters,” said Racquel Henderson, director of programs and strategic partnerships with EPIC for Girls.
The girls also picked up skills for life on and off the court.
“I learned about your self-esteem, confidence, about how you are and what you represent,” said Zxweiyu Ammon.
The program also doubles as an internship, paying each young lady for her time. Now that they’re finished, they’re certified officials by the state of Nebraska.
