Olympic boxer wins despite falsely being called a man on social media [Video]

Mosaic’s trending reporter, Vashti Harris, had our most-read story this week, bringing us the controversy surrounding an Olympic athlete’s gender identity.

Amateur boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria landed a punch that bloodied her opponent’s nose. But instead of finishing the match, Italy’s Angela Carini quit just seconds into the first round, saying ‘enough’ in the opening Olympic boxing match.

Almost immediately, athletes, politicians, a children’s storybook writer, and others took to social media to question Khelif’s gender identity, falsely calling her a man – allegations the International Olympic Committee (IOC) immediately refuted.

“She was born female, was registered female, lived her life as a female, boxed as a female, has a female passport,” IOC spokesperson Mark Adams told CNN. “This is not a transgender case,” he added, …
