Olive Branch program to offer support for aspiring paramedics [Video]

After the pandemic put a toll on the medical community, many paramedics left the field, and there have not been enough applying to replace them.

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss — The pandemic forced many people to rethink their careers, and perhaps there is no clearer example than the medical field.

A study from the National Library of Medicine, the pandemic placed a toll on paramedics’ mental health, in some cases causing them to leave the field entirely, and now the career is facing a shortage.

According to the Arkansas Ambulance Association, the amount training to become paramedics has declined, leaving some Emergency Medical Services in a deficit.

“We have four full-time ambulances right now in the city of Olive Branch, and we’re trying to serve 50,000 residents,” said Glenda Garcia, Olive Branch EMS Captain. “We just weren’t getting any, so we decided we need to grow our own paramedics.”
