WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — On Saturday, the City of Wichita posted a social media reminder that parking will no longer be free in the core downtown area, which includes Old Town and Delano, starting in January.

The city’s Facebook post has generated more than 800 comments, most of them negative. Commenters are concerned that it will keep people from visiting the core area, and employees are worried about how much they will have to pay to park while they work.

The cost

The city says there will be hourly and monthly options. Those rates are still being discussed. They will be based on “location and occupancy rates due to high-trafficked events and business hours in the vicinity.”

The type of payment will vary depending on the location. The city’s website says payments can be made in person or online.
