GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) is urging parents to take steps to protect their children’s personal information after a a cybersecurity breach involving PowerSchool.
The South Carolina Department of Education said the breach resulted in unauthorized access to certain customer data from PowerSchool’s Student Information Systems (SIS), including data from multiple states and school districts across the country.
All but four districts in South Carolina were impacted by the breach, officials said.
SCDCA officials are urging parents to take the following steps to protect their child’s personal information:
- Check if your child has a credit report. Most children under 18 do not have a report so having a report may be a sign of identity theft. Contact each of the three major credit reporting agencies (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) and ask for a manual search for your child’s Social Security Number.
