AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — Mayor Shammas Malik held a press conference Monday to discuss an incident that took place last week at Firestone High School.
According to a press release from Akron Public Schools, the student resource officer and student had an exchange during a metal detector screening on October 16.

The student tried to bypass the metal detector, according to the mayor.
“There was an interaction between a student and the SRO, which ultimately resulted in the officer using force against the student,” the district said.
“During this interaction, one officer punches the student in the head several times,” Malik said.
This incident was witnessed by students and staff present at the scene, according to a press release.
The student required emergency medical services, according to the district.
