Oelweins online education helps rural, non-traditional students receive high school diplomas [Video]

OELWEIN, Iowa (KCRG) – Roughly four years ago, COVID-19 forced the Oelwein Community School District – along with many others – to shift their classes and curriculum online.

For most, it was uncharted territory. But for Oelwein, it was an opportunity to try something new.

“We were looking for alternatives to get kids education not in person, and O2, or Oelwein Online came to be.” said Oelwein’s Superintendent Josh Ehn.

The program is essentially an online version of the district’s standard curriculum, offering the same classes and credentials.

Plus, it’s not just offered to Oelwein students. Any Iowa resident can enroll.

Principal Connie Adams says it’s a way to accommodate students who can’t thrive in or don’t have access to an in-person school, such as kids with anxiety, young parents, former drop-outs, and those with frequent medical issues.
