Novembers election has the highest stakes yet as a referendum on climate change [Video]

Reporter Jake Zuckerman vividly pictures the stunning size of “stadium-size data centers” (July 28). And details the equally stunning sums—in hundreds of millions of dollars—in state and local tax exemptions Big Tech gets for its server farms in and around Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus.

Lack of transparency for these contracts, the few permanent jobs they provide, and potentially overburdened power plants (think blackouts or rate increases) are very real issues.

But the article doesn’t mention an even more serious problem: carbon emissions. Ohio is the nation’s 12th highest carbon emissions state because it runs largely on gas- and coal-fired power plants. Cloud-computing data centers are just one agent in a server-farm onslaught: AI and cryptocurrency also guzzle power and water, and pour ever more carbon into an atmosphere that’s brought us the thirteen consecutive hottest months ever recorded (June 2023-June 2024).
