NEW FREEDOM, Pa. — Northern Central Railway of York on Monday announced the purchase of a GE 80-ton diesel locomotive that it says “will be used to power excursions that educate, entertain and enlighten guests of all ages.”
The locomotive, which was purchased from McHugh Locomotive & Equipment, was previously rebuilt for the U.S. Army and used at the Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, NCR said in a press release.
“As part of our strategic growth plan, we have been considering buying another train for some time,” said NCR executive director Ashley Zimmerman. “The GE 80-ton diesel locomotive, which we have numbered 32, will allow us to continue offering fun and memorable experiences for our community members and tourists.”
