No credible threat: Bonfire explosion connected to students staying home from school, superintendent says [Video]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A dramatic drop in attendance Tuesday at Kodiak High School came two days after a massive fuel drum explosion left eight teenagers injured, including five hospitalized after being medevacked to Anchorage, and a non-credible threat circulating online.

Kodiak Island Bureau School District Superintendent Cyndy Mika said Tuesday that Kodiak police told her that the threat circulating on social media was connected to a weekend bonfire explosion that rocked the community. The alleged threat turned out to be a dud.

“This is a result, probably, of the messages that were circulating on social media amongst the kids about a potential threat that we had been working on since about 11:30 [Monday] night,” Mika told Alaska’s News Source on Tuesday. “We did get threats, and they are associated with the incident, but as the police determined … it wasn’t coming from a specific individual that we know.”
