VERMILLION, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – In 2025, for the first time since 1934, there will be new head coaches leading the college football programs at South Dakota’s flagship colleges.

Unlike SDSU, the University of South Dakota didn’t have to look too far to find the new leader of their pack.

And his predecessor, under different circumstances, got more of a chance to say farewell.

“The relationships with the young men that you get to work with, relationships with staff, those are the things that you get into this profession to do. I told the team last night that you hope in some way, as you’re in this roll, that you do make a difference.” Former USD Head Coach Bob Nielson says.

There were points during the 2024 season when Bob Nielson started to feel like this might be his final year.
