MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A new report could lead to changes in families’ access to quality childcare in Tennessee.
The Tennessee Advisory Committee on Intergovernmental Relations is studying the issue.
A draft of the 143-page state report includes recommendations such as streamlining inspections and zoning rules for childcare centers.
The goal is to help families find quality daycares more easily.Another recommendation includes using vacant and extra public school properties for child care.
The report also says better cooperation between state regulators, boosting worker pay, and cutting taxes for child care businesses could be potential remedies.
“This is not a one-size-fits-all solution,” said State Senator Charlane Oliver. “It needs to be a comprehensive approach where we look at barriers, but also investments. So, if we can bring the childcare workforce along, which I think is being left behind right now, then I think we can do something to really, really strengthen our economy.“
