HDMI Forum, the organization behind the HDMI standard, will soon announce a new HDMI standard—likely the HDMI 2.2.
According to a press release, the new spec will enable a “wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates.” There will also be ‘new cable’ support for it—highly suggesting that no changes were made with the HDMI port at all.

The current HDMI 2.1, released in 2017, can have up to 120Hz variable refresh rates, up to 10K resolution (10240 x 4320), and 48Gbps bandwidth.
Speculations also claim that the new spec won’t be needing Display Stream Compression and still be able to output higher resolutions and refresh rates.
The HDMI Forum is set to officially unveil the new HDMI spec on January 6th at CES in Las Vegas.
