New Hanover County School board passes policy limiting what teachers can display in the classroom including student artwork, family photos [Video]

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The New Hanover County Board of Education voted in a new policy that will control what teachers and staff can display in NHC schools.

The policy has changed from when a school board committee recommended it late last month, originally recommending teachers and staff could display more items than originally proposed including family photos, student artwork and materials that represent other nations.

A motion on June 4 passed 4-1 to remove those items, with board member Stephanie Kraybill the only vote in opposition. Hugh McManus and Stephanie Walker did not attend the meeting.

“I am just so opposed to this,” said Stephanie Kraybill.

According to the new policy, the only things that can be displayed are signs or flags representing the United States, the State of North Carolina, New Hanover County, the school’s name or mascot, post-secondary institutions, school-sponsored events, sponsorships and approved curriculum.
