New Dorchester Heritage Center entering next development stages with new funding [Video]

RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) – A Dorchester area organization is working to preserve Lowcountry history in the backyards of Ridgeville community residents.

The organization plans to open the new Dorchester Heritage Center on 81 acres of land along Highway 78 near Exit 27. The center itself plans to take up 20,000 square feet of that land to include a museum, archive and special event space for residents and businesses.

The project aims to serve the community by teaching the history of the inland parts of the Lowcountry. Chief Operating Officer for the Dorchester Heritage Center David Dement says the new center will be an area of preserved woodland that the county’s growing community will get to experience.

“It’s a place where people can find the history and the background of where they live, to go there and say ‘This is my home now,’” Dement says. “We want them to learn about …
