Needham voters reject plan that would’ve met MBTA law rules [Video]

COMMUNITIES ACT. JEN, GOOD MORNING, DOUG ANTOINETTE. GOOD MORNING. TOWN LEADERS PUT FORWARD AN AMBITIOUS PLAN TO TRY TO MEET THE STATE’S MBTA COMMUNITIES ACT. BUT RESIDENTS HERE IN NEEDHAM SAY THAT THE TOWN NEEDS TO PULL BACK ON THAT PLAN A BIT. AT ISSUE HERE, HOW MANY NEW HOUSING UNITS WOULD NEED TO BE BUILT UNDER THE STATE LAW? NEEDHAM WOULD BE REQUIRED TO ZONE FOR A MINIMUM OF 1784 HOMES. LAST NIGHT, NEEDHAM RESIDENTS VOTED AGAINST THE NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSING PLAN, WHICH ALLOWS UP TO 3294 MULTIFAMILY UNITS. ALTHOUGH TOWN LEADERS SAY THAT NUMBER IS AT THE HIGH END OF WHAT WOULD BE BUILT UNDER THE PLAN. THE GROUP THAT GATHERED ENOUGH SIGNATURES TO PUT THIS TO A SPECIAL ELECTION HAS SAID IT’S NOT AGAINST THE STATE LAW, BUT IT DOES THINK THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF NEW UNITS IS MORE APPROPRIATE.
