OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – State Sen. Mike McDonnell wants to be the next mayor of Omaha.
He’ll face off against Jasmine Harris, Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing, and three-term incumbent Mayor Jean Stothert. The primary is set for April, with the general election happening in May.
The Omaha senator is planning to make his candidacy official on Thursday evening.
McDonell was in the news earlier this year after he refused to vote in favor of making Nebraska a “winner-take-all” electoral votes state. That came after McDonnell joined the Republican Party not long after the Nebraska Democratic Party censured him for his position on abortion.
According to the event announcement, McDonnell was born and raised in South Omaha, and served as a city firefighter for five years and fire chief for six. The lawmaker and his family are also founding members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in South Omaha, the release states.
The filing deadline for the 2025 mayoral election is Feb. 28, 2025. …
