Navasota shuts down two wells, test positive for E. coli [Video]

The city of Navasota alerted citizens to two water wells testing positive for E. coli and immediately shut them down until they test negative.

Citizens were notified by the city on Friday about the infected water wells. According to a press release, the water may be contaminated with human or animal waste. Microbes, like E. coli, found in these wastes can cause many short-term health effects, including diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches and more. They pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some elderly and immuno-compromised people.

Water from the wells is disinfected with chlorine at the water treatment plant prior to distribution. Drinking water is still safe to consume, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Boiling water is not required.
