N.S. news: Social insurance numbers compromised in school data breach [Video]

A global cybersecurity breach compromised hundreds of Nova Scotia school employees’ social insurance numbers (SINs).

The Nova Scotia government says roughly 250 employees of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education had their SINs compromised in the recent PowerSchool breach. The government notes PowerSchool, which tracks grades, enrolment and attendance, has not collected SINs since 2010, so only staff who were hired before than would be impacted.

“Teachers and other staff who worked for the regional centre before 2010 should monitor their bank accounts for any irregular activity,” a news release reads. “Those whose social insurance numbers were included in the breach will be contacted directly by the Province with more information and an offer of credit protection.”

On Thursday the Prince Edward Island government said the personal data of past and present students, teachers, parents, guardians and administrators may have also been compromised in the breach.
