Montgomery Chamber of Commerce urges state takeover of Montgomery Public Schools [Video]

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce is urging the Alabama Department of Education to once again take over the Montgomery Public Schools System.

Chamber officials, as well as other community leaders from the city, county and state, gathered for a Thursday morning news conference to address what the Chamber calls a “leadership crisis for Montgomery County Public Schools.”

Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Board Chairwoman Caryn C. Hughes listed off a number of major economic projects recently announced in the Montgomery area and said, “economic development and community prosperity are built upon education.”

Hughes , who called outgoing MPS Supt. Melvin Brown “a world-class superintendent,” said he’s leaving ”not because he’s been recruited away, but because he has been driven away by four elected members of our own board of education.”
