Mobiles innovation of St. Louis Street to begin in 2025 [Video]

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The City Council on Tuesday gave the green light to a project that will completely overhaul St. Louis Street downtown.

Similar to other “complete streets” projects that Mobile has undertaken in recent years – such as Broad Street – the St. Louis facelift will cover 17 blocks between Broad and Water streets. The design includes repaving the road, putting in new sidewalks, better delineating parking and landscaping. Work is expected to begin after Mardi Gras.

But Jennifer Greene, the city’s director of programs and project management, said the most significant part of the “Innovating St. Louis Street” overhaul might be what happens below ground – new water and sewer pipes.

“The streetscape is the icing on the cake, right?” she said. “And so what’s happening underneath the streets, it’s old infrastructure, a lot of it’s over 100 years old, and so it’s a really important time. That’s why the project is called …
