In what might be the most recent example of neural pathways burning alight on screen, Ned Benson’s The Greatest Hits strikes quite the elusive match linking how deep the bond between music and memory can go, how a notable song can factor in building a relationship. And, inadvertently, how not to give it a hybrid genre allure, leaving the result in an awkward yet empathic position to sing its own praise. To try and balance the vinyl-friendly romance and ego battles of High Fidelity with the reckless time travelling of Edge of Tomorrow might sound like fair game on paper. The very idea leads to a mostly enthralling character drama, challenged only by sustaining a gimmick in need of a detailed rewrite.
