Metro Councilmember rips into delayed deployment of license plate readers [Video]

ANTIOCH, Tenn. (WKRN) — Despite conducting a six-month pilot program in 2023, license plate readers (LPRs) have yet to be implemented full-time across Davidson County.

Councilwoman Joy Styles, a vocal LPR supporter, said that they are simply “not a priority” for city leadership — despite Metro Council’s approval of the addition of LPRs across Nashville in August 2023.

There is a sense of urgency by many within Nashville, especially those at the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), who have worked for the past couple of years to gather community feedback and dispel concerns around LPRs — mainly, one’s personal privacy. In March, MNPD told News 2 that the technology was still in the purchasing phase.

Styles said that the delay has been frustrating, but not surprising. She put the onus solely on the Mayor’s office.
