Maurice Jones running for Omaha City Council District 2 [Video]

Maurice Jones is seeking election to North Omaha’s District 2 on the Omaha City Council, eight years after he first ran for the office as a high school student.

Jones, 26, announced his candidacy this week. He will challenge incumbent council member Juanita Johnson in the 2025 city election.

“The most important need for the community is we need new leadership,” Jones said.

Jones owns a small real estate investment and property management business. He worked for independent Dan Osborn’s 2024 campaign for a U.S. Senate seat from Nebraska. Jones worked as an Omaha police officer from May 2021 to November 2022.

Jones became involved in Democratic politics and ran for City Council in 2017 after taking an Omaha Public Schools trip to Selma, Alabama to learn about Civil Rights history. He finished fifth in a seven-person primary in 2017.
