MASON CITY, Iowa-The Mason City Police Department wants to help the community have a safe and happy holiday season this year,

For the past four years, the department has offered its holiday package program to the community. The program aims to reduce the number of package thefts during the holiday season.

With more people ordering presents online, preventing packages from being stolen can be harder for community members to do.

Although the number of package theft calls has remained consistent, since the program began more people have been sending their packages to the department for safe keeping.

Mason City Police Department Lieutenant Logan Wernet said, “People are excited when they order something in the mail and they’re excited for it to get here and we want to make sure that they’re able to get their packages when they get them so we’re just offering an alternative for that package to …
