Marshalltown mall remains without power almost 9 months after owner failed to pay electric bill [Video]

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (KCRG) – The Marshalltown mall was once a hub of business and community. Now, it’s an empty, dark, deteriorating building.

The owner, Kohan Retail Investment Group, hasn’t paid their power bill since last November.

“This company and owner is a bad actor and, one of the worst actors you’ll find in this business, and it’s happening around the country.” said Jarret Heil, the Chairman of the Marshall County Board of Supervisors.

The mall’s website and phone number no longer work.

And almost every business in the mall has left, excluding the exterior stores that kept power.

But even for the businesses that left, like Game Haven, it hasn’t been easy.

“Our rent doubled, our electricity doubled, everything doubled. We weren’t ready for that. And with the mall shutting down like that, it was like ‘Okay, we have to do it. We have to do it now.’” said Max Pietrzak, Game Haven’s Assistant Manager.
