Maine residents struggle to stay warm with rising costs [Video]

Fuel assistance programs are offering support to families as temperatures drop this winter.

SANFORD, Maine — With most of Maine facing an icy “arctic blast” this week, staying warm has become a challenge for many. 

Jackie Parisi, director of energy services at York County Community Action Corporation, says this January has been especially brutal. “This is a very desperate time for residents,” Parisi explained. “Driving in this morning, it was negative 9 degrees.”

Her team at the York County Community Action Corporation is working tirelessly to address the surge in calls for help, many of which come from older adults and people with disabilities struggling to heat their homes.

Even with advice on how to weatherize homes, many of Maine’s residents are still battling the cold. “We are a state with the oldest housing stock,” Parisi said. “Many houses are not as insulated as they could be, and staying warm …
