Lynchburg School Board disbands Equity Task Force [Video]

The Lynchburg City School Board did away with its Equity Task Force and added an exception to its cellphone policy during a meeting Tuesday night.

The task force was created in 2015 to meet four to five times per year, to assist with the evaluation of equitable practices in six areas:

  • Staff recruitment and retention;
  • Students’ academics in climate;
  • Training all stakeholders including parents, students, staff, community and school board;
  • Engagement and involvement of all stakeholders;
  • Culture diversity: celebration and recognition; and
  • Increase access, opportunity and removal of barriers.

Letitia Lowery, District 2 school board member, made the initial motion to dissolve the task force.

Lowery said her motion is based on “not producing the academic goals last year” and also, it’s not a required committee.

Vice Chair Martin Day said “at this stage” he doesn’t think the division needs a special committee “to be telling us” when the board needs to have equity considerations.
