Louisiana Pecan Shelling Company experiences shortages [Video]

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Louisiana Pecan Shelling Company in Monroe is experiencing a shortage in products due to drought during the season for the past two years.

“We don’t want to lose the customers. We want to keep our customers coming,” said Abraham Lincoln, general manager of Louisiana Pecan Shelling Company.

With two months of no rain, the pecans have not been able to grow properly, which in turn leads to spoilage and a loss of products.

According to Lincoln, pecan trees require over 200 gallons of water a day to be able to grow during the off-season.

Lincoln said the results of the drought can be detrimental to the business.

“We’re throwing away about half of everything we harvest, which, you know, that’s not good,” said Lincoln.

The drought is not just impacting the crop, but also those who depend on it to make ends meet.
