Longtime Columbus police chief announces retirement [Video]

COLUMBUS, Neb. (KOLN) – The City of Columbus police chief has announced his retirement after 27 years with the Columbus Police Department, effective Mar. 3.

Charles Sherer’s retirement marks the conclusion of a 46-year career in law enforcement. Sherer joined the Columbus Police Department as a captain in 1997 and was promoted to chief in 2017.

“Chief Sherer has dedicated decades to serving Columbus, and we are grateful for his leadership and commitment,” Columbus Mayor Jim Bulkley said. “Beyond leading an outstanding team of officers, he connected with the community in countless ways, from grilling hot dogs at events to addressing citizens’ concerns. We wish him all the best in this next chapter.”

Sherer reflected on his career, sharing his appreciation for those he worked with and served throughout Columbus.
