RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Kids are used to learning in traditional classrooms, but imagine being given the opportunity to learn in a classroom on wheels.
The Isna Wica Owayawa Loneman Elementary School in Oglala launched a reading project two weeks before winter break. To help students develop a love for reading when school is in session, every Monday through Thursday starting at around 4:45 p.m., a “reading bus” will travel to various homes in the community.
Students climb aboard and have reading sessions with two project coordinators. Each session includes one to five students and runs for an hour to an hour and a half.
“We have students where the reading statistics have fallen off. Our students are not testing as well formally on their assessments for reading. Reading as a primary function of a student’s life is also falling off,” Co-Coordinator for the Loneman School reading project Ann-Marie …
