BANGOR — On Sunday, the world learned of the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, who was one hundred years old. During his long life he left an impact on many communities, including the city of Bangor. We spoke with locals who remember his 1978 visit like it was yesterday.
“I’m wondering if he’s going to come my way and all of a sudden you can see his blue eyes and his cufflinks,” said Bangor Historian Richard Shaw.
Shaw was in his twenties when President Carter touched down at the Bangor International Airport in February of 1978 as part of a tour of New England.
“I’ve seen quite a few of the presidents, Kennedy twice and Eisenhower and Johnson and Nixon, but as far as actually meeting one, he may be the only sitting president I’ve shook hands …
