CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — By the start of 2025, all Virginia public schools will be cell-phone free as Governor Glenn Youngkin issued Executive Order 33 on Tuesday.
Albemarle County Public Schools and Charlottesville City Schools said they’re relieved to get some help from the top on enforcing their existing cell phone policies.
“While we all want local solutions, I do think sometimes there is some help in having, ‘This is just state guidance,” said Beth Cheuk with Charlottesville City Schools.
Executive Order 33 calls for the State Department of Education to make age-appropriate restrictions or elimination of cell phone use during instructional time
The order also requires the state to make protocols for kids to talk to their parents when needed.
“It’s a really tricky landscape where there’s a lot of disagreement among parents, even among staff and certainly most students,” Cheuk said.
