BERLIN, CT (WFSB) – Businesses stepped up to help the local community as the Hawthorne fire continued to burn.
Restaurants cooked for the fire crews that have been working to contain the brush.
“[We’re] just trying to give back to the community,” said Van Hurd, the executive chef at Hop Haus.
Hurd and his kitchen staff brought dozens of burgers to firefighters on the scene this week. They wanted to express their gratitude for the workers.
“We know the guys are out there working hard, so the least we could do is throw them some burgers,” Hurd said.
Hop Haus invited everyone who worked at the scene to stop in for a free meal.
“We‘re going to drop off burgers everyday until they’re done over there,” Hurd said. “This one‘s so important because it’s right down the street. It‘s local and I’ve never seen anything like it. Usually that only …
