Lincoln’s largest credit union faces lawsuits over data breach [Video]

A Lincoln-based credit union is facing a potential class-action lawsuit over a data breach it disclosed last month.

Two Lincoln women, Denise Walker and Susan McMurtry, have filed lawsuits in U.S. District Court alleging that Liberty First Credit Union failed to “implement adequate and reasonable cybersecurity procedures and protocols,” allowing sensitive customer information to be accessed.

The lawsuits are seeking to be certified as class-action complaints.

In a letter to customers dated Nov. 25, Liberty First said that it discovered the data breach on Sept. 17 and engaged a forensic security firm to investigate.

The credit union said in the letter that the investigation determined that an “unauthorized third party” got access to files that contained personal information, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers and account numbers.

However, Liberty First said the stolen information did not include online banking log-in credentials or debit card numbers.
